More space & less stress:

Keeping your closet organized not only provides a better overview but also saves a lot of time and nerves in the morning. If you want to organize your closet, our five steps will help you effectively declutter your wardrobe and create new order.

This way, you not only declutter things you no longer need and gain more storage space, but you also create a new sense of well-being in the bedroom.

Step 1: Empty the entire closet

In the first step, completely empty your wardrobe. Even if it seems tedious at first, it's worth emptying everything out. Most of the time, accessories or clothing items that are no longer really needed are found right at the top of the wardrobe or in the bottom drawers. You can do without these space hogs in the future and instead use the space sensibly. It's best to first place the emptied clothes on the bed so you can sort them later.

If the wardrobe is emptied, take the time to dust and clean it thoroughly. You can also take the opportunity to give your wardrobe the right furniture care.

Also, polish your mirrors until they gleam. Furthermore, this is the perfect moment to take a look in your closet and consider if it still suits your needs.

Step 2: Sort Clothes Effectively

In the second step, it's time to declutter. Pick up each piece of clothing and accessory and consider when you last wore it. Stylists often cite a golden rule: If you haven't worn something in a year, you can get rid of it. Of course, there are exceptions to this. These include basics that are needed from time to time but are not usually worn constantly, for example:

  • Blazer,
  • Suit or tuxedo,
  • Evening gown,
  • Leather jackets,
  • the „little black dress“ or a sheath dress,
  • elegant coats

Place the clothing items that count as these exceptions and belong in every wardrobe on one pile, along with the clothes you definitely wear regularly. Put the clothes you will definitely no longer wear on a separate pile.
Definitely be honest with yourselves. If you're unsure about a clothing item, you can assign it to a third pile, the „Maybe Pile.“ We'll tackle this pile in the third step.

Step 3: Organize your closet with a focus on the essentials

Only clothes you actually wear should go back into your closet. It often comes down to how the clothes can be combined. If you have items on your maybe pile that you find beautiful but rarely wear, take your time and try them on.
The following questions can help you decide whether to keep the items:

  • Do the items fit, or are they more of a "wish size"? Then they definitely belong on the decluttering pile. Your clothes should fit your body, not the other way around. If you actually lose or gain weight, you'll probably buy new clothes anyway.
  • Does the clothing match your personal style and do you feel comfortable in it? If yes, the next question will help you. If not, the items should be sorted out.
  • What can you combine these clothes with? Just try out what you can wear with them. You're sure to find new styling possibilities!

In this step, you should also take a closer look at your accessories. Scarves, belts, shoes, bags, ties, and the like are often the icing on the cake of a perfect outfit. However, they should also match you and your style, as well as your existing clothing.
Accessories should only go back into the closet if you'll actually use them later. Everything else belongs in the discard pile.

Step 4: Check and sort clothes

Now it's time to actually put things away and organize your closet in a sensible way. It's best to carefully check the clothes you're keeping for damage and stains. If you find socks, shirts, or pants with holes, they should go straight onto the discard pile.

Now you can start putting away your clothes to hang. How you organize your closet is entirely up to your preference. You can group clothes by season, but also by color or occasion. In any case, you should create order so that you have what you need at a glance.
It's best to organize accessories, socks, shoes, and bags into designated drawers and compartments, if available in your closet.

When organizing the clothes into compartments, you should also pay attention to a practical system that makes your everyday life easier. It's beneficial to have basics that you wear frequently readily accessible. For example, shirts, jeans, and sweaters should be in a compartment at a height that is easily visible and reachable.

Items that you don't wear very often can be sorted into the upper or lower compartments. It's also worth approaching this systematically so you can find things again quickly. You can organize clothes by type and color, and you'll bring even more structure to your closet by sorting them by length.

Step 5: What to do with old clothes?

Step 5: What to do with old clothes?
Once everything is sorted and your closet is organized again, you just need to get rid of the clothes you decluttered. You can:

  • give away,
  • sell,
  • donate or
  • process further.

Friends or relatives might be happy about clothing that is in good condition or even new. How about, for example, a girls' night out where trying on and gifting are the focus? If you want to sell clothes or accessories, you can inquire at a second-hand shop near you or use corresponding online platforms. A clothing swap can also be a great way to get rid of old clothes and acquire new favorites yourself without having to spend money.

If you would like to donate clothes, you can drop them off in old clothes containers, hand them over to Caritas, the Red Cross, or other social organizations. Please ensure that the clothing is still wearable and not damaged.

You don't have to throw away old towels, shirts, or blouses made of pure cotton if they're damaged. You can cut them to the right size and they'll be perfect as cleaning rags.

With these five steps, it's not difficult at all to organize your closet and have all your clothes neatly within reach. Now you have everything ready at your fingertips and can calmly dedicate yourself to the question of the right outfit in the morning, without having to rummage through piles of clothes first.

Happy sorting!
